It would appear thanks to J K Rowling’s stories featuring the young magician Harry Potter that the youth of the world, more often ritually drawn towards comics and television, are happily opting for books again – if not more than a cohort of adults as well. The allure of Harry Potter’s exploits, his trials and tribulations, his friends and foes, and all the manner of malevolent forces arrayed against him have coalesced in to a publishing phenomenon – that despite so many diverse phantasmagorical tales erupting volcano-like into the world of children’s publishing from a plethora of exceptional authors these few mesmerising Harry Potter yarns have captured the universal imagination unlike any other literary saga since The Lord Of the Rings. The books relate a world of child-wonder to be sure, but this is not the sure, safe, environ of a traditional youngster’s adventure where conventional moral values reassure and night terrors are assuaged by comforting adult consoling. No, the landscape of Harry Potter’s life is populated by injustice, by duplicitous grown-ups, by dread demons, by darkness deeper than black midnight. That Harry and his friends exhibit resolve, resourcefulness and uncommon valour is an anthem to inherent childhood resilience and determination in the face of the kind of adversity that would phase many an adult ethos. Happily Harry has magic, of course, but then, by jingo, he needs it! Disc 1 |
