Mike Hadreas has spent 2025 telling people that his next Perfume Genius album, Glory, will be his “most directly confessional” album to date. He’s explained that it will examine both his interior life and external forces. Longtime Perfume Genius listeners will be forgiven for wondering how, exactly, that is possible. Not the confessional nature of his music, but the metric by which “most” can be measured. Is it “more” directly confessional than his 2020 breakthrough album Set My Heart on Fire Immediately? That album, an anchor in the storm of the early pandemic, channeled Hadreas’ quivering anxiety and melded it with a soaring need for love. It was also bracingly direct: a personal, rootsy sort of chamber pop that embraced at once queer rage and queer joy. It was wrapped in the rags of Reagan-era American music – synth pop, string balladry, rock ‘n’ roll – but Hadreas had fun with it, making songs that were subversive but also catchy as hell.
