In June 2022, Yunchan Lim became the youngest gold medallist of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition; his performances demonstrated a ‘magical ability’ and a ‘natural, instinctive quality’ (La Scena) that astonished listeners around the world. The jury chairman Marin Alsop commented as follows: ‘Yunchan is the rare artist who organically combines deep musicality and astonishing technique.’ His artistic ability and connection with the audience also secured him the audience prize and the prize for the best performance of a new work. The young Korean’s subsequent rise to international fame has been meteoric.
