The piano concertos of Schumann and Grieg, often combined, seem to trace the range of romantic expression, from the most intimate to the most triumphant. This emblematic repertoire, the ground of the encounter between pianist Reed Tetzloff and Sir John Eliot Gardiner, however, has some surprises. The choice to record a rarely heard intermediate version of Schumann’s Concerto offers insight into the evolution of the work and sheds light on Schumann’s composition process and her relationship with Clara, a true artistic collaborator. Soloist and conductor, driven by the common desire to call, surprise and share, demonstrate here an undeniable artistic affinity with a fresh and inhabited interpretation.
