This recording of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. John Passion sweeps the listener along like a raging torrent from the very first opening chorus, “Herr, unser Herrscher,” performed with dramatic intensity by the singers of Pygmalion under the direction of Raphaël Pichon. In his introductory notes, the French conductor perfectly captures the “cruel yet gripping humanity” that runs through this masterpiece—a work in which the composer delivers “a meticulous musical exegesis of the Gospel, illuminating its meaning without ever overshadowing it.”

Pichon’s approach is one of suggestion rather than imposition. Above all, his leadership remains respectful of the music, never forcing the expression or the tempo. The soloists are all perfectly in tune with one another, contributing significantly to the ensemble’s overall coherence. A special mention must go to tenor Julien Prégardien, who takes on the formidable role of the Evangelist.
