Telemann Concerto in E Minor for Recorder, Flute and Strings, TWV 52E1 IV. Presto Though famously prolific, much of Georg Philipp Telemann’s output remains ripe for discovery. Held in high regard by his friend Johann Sebastian Bach, Telemann was far more renowned during his lifetime, before history’s shifting tastes—not always fair—relegated him to the shadows of his contemporary. Boasting a staggering catalog of 6,000 works, including 40 operas and 44 Passions, Telemann is a prime candidate for the most prolific composer in history. A former child prodigy, he turned his hand to every contemporary genre with consistent brilliance. Inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the dramatic cantata Ino dates from the composer’s final years. Closely related to opera, the work alternates between expressive recitatives and virtuosic arias, performed here with aplomb by British soprano Elizabeth Watts. The remainder of the program shifts focus to instrumental music, featuring two dazzling double concertos. These pieces perfectly capture Telemann’s unbridled imagination, shattering traditional forms while exploring a rich tapestry of instrumental combinations. Ashley Solomon and his ensemble, Florilegium, are joined by violinist Rachel Podger and flautist Hannah Parry for a recording that celebrates a composer whose capacity to surprise remains undiminished. |
