N.Y.P.D. 南洋派对 – DON’T LIKE 我钟意

Hong Kong post-punk outfit N.Y.P.D. 南洋派對 return with their sophomore full-length album titled ‘DON’T LIKE’. A blend of psychedelia, Chinese folk and post-punk, as the 5-piece band hailing from Kowloon’s Tai Kok Tsui continue to share satirical commentary on communal anguish in the over-populated city that is home; Hong Kong.
Crashing in with the opener “MON-SUN”, is a solid delivery of rebellious composure where defiant riffs and tight drum rolls are paired with psychedelic screams of substance abbreviations and disorders that have led to modern day absurdity, an apt complement to “Donki Donki 熱情価格” with its specific use of synthesizers and retro glitch composition overlaid by colloquial slang and memoirs.
Fan favourite “Drip 冷氣機滴水” is a rhythmic nod to the annoyance of summer traumas, touch up with its retro surf-rock style guitar riff. “STFU” arrives in a timely manner, in light of all the jibber-jabber caused by a content graveyard generation of opinion makers with little substance, while “Hair 重新出髪” dial timelines and hairlines back to the electro-clash era.
Midway, “Alone 自己一個” and “Leave Me 我鍾意” take listeners back down a notch, giving some breathing room if you will, so we can re-collect the audio chaos. “Have a Light 借火” sees a complete reaarange to its single version precedor, turns itself into a bossa nova ode to those lighter thieves we all at least met ten times in our lives. If “I’m Sober 我冇醉”’s collaboration with Cheuk Wan-chi doesn’t urge listeners to start pogoing, then “Piledriver of Love 愛情打椿機” will throw you back into an ‘80s indie dance acid excursion, leaving the party with a heart full of “Joy 心”.
