How should we read Ronsard today? Quite simply out loud, or by singing his texts, as people did in the sixteenth century. Because, for Ronsard, nothing was more natural than joining music with poetry. As soon as his collection Les Amours was published, such musicians as Janequin set the poems to music. And long after the poet’s death, many composers continued to do so, Bizet, Saint-Saëns, Ravel and Poulenc among them. Now Julien Joubert has turned his attention to Ronsard’s output, with the aid of the ensemble Romances sans Paroles (conductor Marie-Noëlle Maerten) and the choirs of La Musique de Léonie (conductor Corinne Barrère).
